What methods of teaching are most effective?
The method of teaching that a Teacher uses is one of the biggest factors in deciding what a person will get out of that class. I have noticed many different methods of teaching in being a student, and I have found which are most effective for the best learning experience. Three of the methods that I have found I have made up names for, they are as follows: Long Lecture- Homework, Short Lecture- Homework, and Long Lecture- Study.
Long Lecture- Homework is pretty effective, but homework is boring and students tend to just look for the answers when doing homework. When this happens they don't retain things they learn, when just look for answers they don't actually study. Plus the test is usually harder than the homework, and requires more information and thought but the students did their homework without other study.
The least effective method is probably Short Lecture- Homework. The short lecture does not explain major concepts, and if the student does not understand something then he/she is more likely to just copy the answer out of the text book. Then when the test comes around they can't remember what they didn't understand, so they get a bad score on the test. This is problematic because they don't actually learn very much at all.
Long Lecture- Study is the most effective way for students to learn. Students should be given little homework and more responsibility to study for tests on their own. It would help people learn responsibility for the rest of their life. It may make school a little harder, but those with responsible attitudes that know they need to study and read in order to get good grades, would learn more. Then the failing students would eventually learn that they have to study.
One of my favorite teachers uses the method of Lecture- Study (he lectures and then you study on your own) in his AP Psychology class. In this class I have been learning more than in any of my other classes and it is also one of my favorite classes. And even though the tests are super hard, I know that if I study, I will do well on them. If all teachers were like this it would make school much more fun, you would learn more, school would be more predictable in amount of study and work needed.
